A drone mini is a small UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) that’s designed for easy operation and portability. They’re often used by first-time pilots to gain familiarity with the controls and to learn how to fly safely and responsibly. They’re also popular with hobbyists and professionals who want to add a unique perspective to their photography or video footage.
As the trend continues toward smaller UAVs, there’s no shortage of new mini drones on the market. Some are designed to be a bit more fun than others and offer a range of different features that are geared towards specific uses. For instance, there are mini drones with thermal imaging capabilities that can detect movement in the air by using heat transfer to determine wind speed. This technology has the potential to be used in a number of different industries, including agriculture and search-and-rescue missions.
Despite the mini size, many of these drones have powerful sensors and processors to ensure they’re capable of operating safely. In addition, they use advanced software and intelligent flight modes to help users achieve the best possible results from their flights. In addition to standard features like flight stabilization and auto takeoff, some drone minis come with gimbal locks to prevent the drone from tilting while in flight, as well as intelligent battery management.
DJI’s latest entry into the drone mini space is the Mavic Mini 2. It offers a similar form factor to its predecessor and has an impressive amount of functionality for such a small device. It’s also fairly lightweight, meaning it doesn’t require registration with the FAA and can be taken virtually anywhere without issue.
One of the main attractions with this drone mini is the quality of its camera, which is capable of recording 4K video at up to 16 meters per second. The image sensor is a bit on the small side, but the overall image quality is rich and sharp, even when shooting in bright light. There is some noticeable loss of contrast in low-light situations, however.
The DJI Mavic Mini 2 also comes with OcuSync 2.0, which is the company’s improved automatic frequency switching technology. This helps to reduce video transmission interference and gives the drone a claimed maximum communication range of 10 kilometers.
Another big selling point for this model is its decent battery life. DJI claims 30 minutes of flight time, which is pretty good for such a small drone. If you opt for the pricier Fly More Combo bundle you’ll also get an extra couple of batteries and charging hub thrown in for good measure.
The Mavic Mini 2 also includes QuickShot mode, which is basically a miniature version of Active Track technology. Depending on which QuickShot mode you choose, it will follow a semi-predefined flight path, while keeping you framed. This can include things like an orbit or a boomerang-like path. These types of shots are great for taking ad hoc social-media-sized tidbits of yourself being tracked.
